At the local pier when I fished more regularly, if they were running you just threw in a chrome hook and jig it and they would bite! As for the beach it was much harder to follow them up and down the coast but it can be done. It really depends on where you live and how much beach access there is. In SE Florida the beach is mostly either private property or public beaches so it can be very heard to find a spot.

Try any inlets you have nearby. Those are a great place to gain beach access and there are usually many types of fish to try for if the macks are not around.
